Is my phone eSIM compatible?
Almost every mainstream phone released since 2019 supports eSIM — 67 model lines are listed below. Two things have to be true: the model has an eSIM chip, and the phone is not locked to a carrier. The 30-second check on your phone is definitive; the list is the map.
The definitive 30-second check
Model lists go out of date and the same model can ship with or without eSIM depending on where it was sold. Your phone itself always knows. Open the dialler and type *#06#: if an EID line appears alongside the IMEI, the phone has an eSIM. You can also find it in settings:
- Open Settings → General → About
- Scroll to the bottom
- An “EID” row means eSIM is supported
- Open Settings → About phone
- Tap SIM status or IMEI information
- An “EID” value means eSIM is supported

Support can differ by region and carrier variant — especially Samsung A-series, Xiaomi, OPPO and OnePlus, and almost every phone sold in mainland China. When the list and the phone disagree, the *#06# EID check wins.
Phones that do not support eSIM
These are the models people ask about most. They have no eSIM chip, so no travel eSIM from any provider will install on them — a physical SIM is the only option.
- iPhone X, 8, 8 Plus, 7 and earlier

Carrier-locked phones
A phone bought on a contract or instalment plan is often locked to that carrier and will refuse to add any other line — including a travel eSIM. The install fails with a message like “This eSIM cannot be added” or simply hangs. It is not an eSIM problem; the phone is doing what the carrier asked.
Ask your home carrier to unlock the phone before you travel. In many countries they must do it free once the contract is paid off; it usually takes a few hours to a couple of days. Check the status on iPhone under Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock (“No SIM restrictions” means unlocked).
iPads, watches and laptops
Cellular iPads from the iPad Pro (2018) onward, and many Windows laptops with 5G modems, can install a data eSIM the same way as a phone. Apple Watch and Galaxy Watch cannot: their eSIM must mirror a plan from your home carrier. OneTapSIM plans are data-only, so they suit phones, tablets and laptops.
Compatibility questions
My phone is on the list but the eSIM won’t install. Why?
The two usual causes are a carrier lock and a regional variant without eSIM. Check Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock on iPhone, and run the *#06# check on any phone. If the EID is missing, that particular unit has no eSIM regardless of the model name.
Does eSIM work on a dual-SIM phone?
Yes — that is the ideal setup. Your physical SIM keeps your home number for calls and messages, and the travel eSIM handles data. Most phones run one physical SIM plus one eSIM; recent iPhones and Pixels can run two eSIMs at once.
I have an iPhone 14 or newer bought in the US. Is anything different?
US-market iPhone 14 and later have no physical SIM tray at all, so eSIM is the only way they connect. They work exactly the same with a travel eSIM — you simply won’t be swapping a plastic card.
Does eSIM support depend on my operating system version?
Only at the edges. Any iPhone on iOS 12.1 or later and any Android on version 9 or later with an eSIM chip can install a profile. The one-tap install on iPhone needs iOS 17.4 or later; older versions use the QR code.
Can I check compatibility before I buy?
Yes, and you should — plans are not refundable once delivered. Run the *#06# check and confirm the phone is unlocked. If either fails, do not buy an eSIM for that phone.
What about phones sold in mainland China?
Nearly all of them ship without eSIM, including models that have it elsewhere. If your phone was bought in mainland China, assume no eSIM unless the *#06# check shows an EID.
